The Borowitz Report: Desperate Trump Tries To Fix Plunging Stock Price With Sharpie

An ugly scene unfolded at Mar-a-Lago on Monday as an increasingly apoplectic Donald J. Trump watched the stock price of his newly listed Trump Media & Technology Group plummet.

Incensed by CNBC’s graph tracking his stock’s dizzying descent, Trump uncapped a black Sharpie and started defacing the TV screen in a desperate attempt to halt the slide.

After Eric Trump whined that his father was “wrecking the TV,” the indicted businessman hurled the Sharpie at his son, disfiguring his forehead.

Across the country, members of the MAGA movement who invested in Trump Media were reportedly in a state of shock that a company run by Donald Trump could lose money.

Trump took to Truth Social to offer them an explanation for his stock’s humiliating crash. “Everything is Going To Hell under JOE BIDEN!” he claimed.

Meanwhile, in a sign of his fading fortunes, Trump has started calling his wife Mazda. https://www.borowitzreport.com/p/desperate-trump-tries-to-fix-plunging

Trump Can Skim $32 Million Big-Donor Dollars from RNC

Under a new scheme engineered by Donald Trump, his personal committee that has been paying his legal bills will be able to skim nearly $32 million from large-dollar donors that otherwise would have gone to the Republican Party, if he and the party can match their fundraising numbers from four years ago. https://www.huffpost.com/entry/trump-skim-donor-money_n_660721d7e4b0f16f4a31fa7c

Republican-appointed judges raise alarm over Trump attacks on law

Since late 2020, as Trump began escalating his attacks on the judiciary, serious investigated threats against federal judges have more than doubled, from 224 in 2021 to 457 in 2023, according to the U.S. Marshals Service.

Federal judges in Washington say at least half of trial judges handling cases arising from the Jan. 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol have received a surge in threats and harassment, including death threats to their homes, with Trump’s election obstruction trial judge, Tanya S. Chutkan, placed under 24-hour protection. https://www.washingtonpost.com/dc-md-va/2024/03/29/trump-judge-attacks-violence/

Obamacare once cost Democrats elections. Now Biden’s hoping to win on it.

Trump Posts Articles on Easter That He is "The Chosen One" by God

On Easter morning, Trump made 71 social media posts. Only one of those referenced Easter, where he simply posted, "HAPPY EASTER."

The rest of Trump's posts included attacks on Judge Merchan's daughter, Mike Gallagher, Jon Stewart, Engoron, Biden, Maxine Watters, Letitia James, Alvin Bragg, Fani Willis, Obama, Hunter Biden and Marc Elias.

He also made several posts citing favorable polls, an article about his retribution if elected, several of people endorsing him, an article claiming Russian collusion was a hoax, an article about migrant crime, and several repeating the lies about the Biden's White House's Easter Egg hunt and transgender proclamation.

One post claimed that he (Trump) is ‘The Chosen One’ sent by God and blessed by God. https://www.meidastouch.com/news/trump-posts-articles-on-easter-that-he-is-the-chosen-one-by-god

China’s Advancing Efforts to Influence the U.S. Election Raise Alarms

Covert Chinese accounts are masquerading online as American supporters of former President Donald Trump, promoting conspiracy theories, stoking domestic divisions and attacking President Biden ahead of the election in November.

The accounts signal a potential tactical shift in how Beijing aims to influence American politics, with more of a willingness to target specific candidates and parties, including Mr. Biden.

In an echo of Russia’s influence campaign before the 2016 election, China appears to be trying to harness partisan divisions to undermine the Biden administration’s policies, despite recent efforts by the two countries to lower the temperature in their relations. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/01/business/media/china-online-disinformation-us-election.html

A Russian Defector’s Killing Raises Specter of Hit Squads

The men who killed Maksim Kuzminov wanted to send a message. This was obvious to investigators in Spain even before they discovered who he was. Not only did the killers shoot him six times in a parking garage in southern Spain, they ran over his body with their car.

They also left an important clue to their identity, according to investigators: shell casings from 9-millimeter Makarov rounds, a standard ammunition of the former Communist bloc.

Mr. Kuzminov defected from Russia to Ukraine last summer, flying his Mi-8 military helicopter into Ukrainian territory and handing the aircraft along with a cache of secret documents to Ukrainian intelligence operatives. In doing so, he committed the one offense President Vladimir V. Putin of Russia has said again and again he will never forgive: treachery. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/31/world/europe/russian-defector-murder-spain.html

The Church of Trump: How He’s Infusing Christianity Into His Movement

Long known for his improvised and volatile stage performances, former President Donald Trump now tends to finish his rallies on a solemn note.

Soft, reflective music fills the venue as a hush falls over the crowd. Mr. Trump’s tone turns reverent and somber, prompting some supporters to bow their heads or close their eyes. Others raise open palms in the air or murmur as if in prayer.

In this moment, Mr. Trump’s audience is his congregation, and the former president their pastor as he delivers a roughly 15-minute finale that evokes an evangelical altar call, the emotional tradition that concludes some Christian services in which attendees come forward to commit to their savior. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/01/us/politics/trump-2024-religion.html

Trump Puts Criminal Trial at Center of His Campaign

Barring further delay, Trump’s hush-money trial on 34 state felony charges begins April 15. He is required to attend the proceedings, which are scheduled for every day of the workweek except Wednesdays and coming Jewish holidays—putting him in Manhattan for a crucial stretch of the campaign instead of in battlegrounds like Michigan or Nevada.

Trump hopes to use that to his advantage by firing up supporters, raising money and casting himself as a victim. https://www.wsj.com/politics/elections/trumps-split-screen-strategy-put-criminal-trial-at-center-of-his-campaign-0767fb34

Trump Launches 3rd Attack on Judge’s Daughter, This Time with Photos

Donald Trump launched yet another attack against the daughter of New York Supreme Court Justice Juan Merchan, who is overseeing the trial regarding the former president’s alleged hush money payments to adult film actress Stormy Daniels.

In a Truth Social post on Saturday, Trump shared a link to a New York Post article about the judge’s daughter, who has consulted to Democratic campaigns, and wrote, “This is a disgrace to our Legal System. Judge Merchan should be immediately sanctioned and recused, and this fake ‘case,’ only kept alive by the Highly Conflicted Judge, should be completely dismissed right away.” The post included photos of Merchan’s daughter.

"Maybe the judge is such a hater because his daughter makes money by working to ‘Get Trump,’ and when he rules against me over and over again, he is making her company, and her, richer and richer,” Trump wrote on Truth Social earlier this week. https://uk.news.yahoo.com/trump-launches-another-attack-judge-145208524.html

Now that congressional maps are likely finalized for the 2024 elections, we know that the House battlefield will be even more tilted toward Republicans this year than it was in 2022. Trump's Bibles and the evolution of his messianic message

Few politicians have commanded the loyalty of the religious right like former President Trump, whose decision to begin selling $60 Bibles for Holy Week has outraged his critics — but drawn little reaction from evangelical leaders.

Trump has developed a sense of impunity when it comes to religious messaging, forged through a grand compromise with Christian conservatives who see him as a flawed — but effective — champion of their movement. https://www.axios.com/2024/03/28/trump-bibles-christianity-easter

"The Spoiler"

RFK Jr.’s candidacy brings with it the potential for a substantial swing vote, largely due to two factors — a large share of the electorate (potentially as many as one in five voters) has an unfavorable opinion of both Trump and Biden, while RFK Jr. is largely represents a blank slate with most voters, with the potential for both sides to paint him as aligned with the opposition.

And yet for all we know about Biden and Trump and this campaign, it’s a third man — one who has been in the public consciousness for just as long, if not longer — who has emerged as the known unknown of the 2024 race: Robert F. Kennedy Jr..

This much people agree on: RFK Jr. is a spoiler.

What they don’t quite agree on is whose campaign his candidacy is spoiling. https://www.politico.com/newsletters/playbook/2024/03/28/bidens-nyc-money-bomb-00149501

Many GOP billionaires balked at Jan. 6. They’re coming back to Trump

As hopes of a Republican alternative have crumbled, elite donors who once balked at Trump’s fueling of the Capitol insurrection, worried about his legal problems and decried what they saw as his chaotic presidency are rediscovering their affinity for the former president — even as he praises and vows to free Jan. 6 defendants, promises mass deportations and faces 88 felony charges.

The shift reflects many conservative billionaires’ fears of President Biden’s tax agenda, which if approved would drastically reduce their fortunes. In some cases, it also points to their discomfort with the Biden administration’s foreign and domestic policy decisions. Some of these billionaires have been assiduously courted by Trump and his advisers in recent months.  https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/29/trump-billionaires-gop-donors/

Trump stays silent on detained U.S. reporter as he avoids criticizing Putin

Donald Trump, the presumptive Republican nominee, has made no public statements on Russia’s detention of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, who has been held for one year without formal charges or a trial.

Asked directly to clarify Trump’s position on Friday, his campaign did not respond to requests for comment. Trump has consistently gone out of his way to avoid criticizing Russian president Vladimir Putin, and Trump himself routinely demonizes reporters with terms such as ‘the enemy’ and ‘criminals.'

His silence stands out among bipartisan condemnation of the detention and calls for Gershkovich’s release. https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/03/29/trump-gershkovich-putin-journalist/

Woman Who Unjustly Received 5-Year Sentence in Voter Fraud Case Is Acquitted

In a case that has prompted outrage from voting-rights activists for years, a Texas appeals court reversed itself on Thursday and acquitted a woman who had been sentenced to five years in prison for illegally casting a provisional ballot in the 2016 election.

The decision came two years after the Texas Court of Criminal Appeals, the state’s highest criminal court, ruled that the lower appeals court, the Second Court of Criminal Appeals, had misconstrued the illegal voting statute under which Crystal Mason was found guilty in 2018. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/28/us/politics/crystal-mason-texas-voting-acquitted.html

Trump’s weaknesses with GOP voters go beyond the suburbs

It’s true that the hundreds of thousands of GOP primary voters who voted against former President Donald Trump this year were concentrated in highly educated, suburban areas that have swung blue over the past decade.

But a Politico analysis shows there’s also a significant bloc of voters who did not want Trump in more exurban, red-leaning counties — the kinds of places that were skeptical of Trump in the 2016 GOP primary and, while largely voting for him in the 2016 and 2020 general elections, have remained somewhat resistant to his takeover of the Republican Party.

The analysis of GOP presidential primary results from more than 1,000 counties shows warning signs for Trump, especially as Republican voters continued to vote against him in closed primaries after he clinched the nomination. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/03/30/trump-gop-primary-voters-exurbs-00149822

Florida’s abortion ruling puts Trump on the spot over DeSantis’ bans

The Florida state Supreme Court on Monday upheld a 15-week ban signed by DeSantis — a move that in 30 days will trigger a far more restrictive 6-week ban also backed by the governor, just months before the November election.

The justices also ruled that Floridians will be able to vote in the November election to reverse the ban and make abortion broadly legal in the state through a constitutional amendment. The proposed amendment will put the abortion question on the ballot below voters’ choices for president, Senate and other down-ballot races right as voters weigh the impact of the DeSantis-backed restrictions. https://www.politico.com/news/2024/04/01/florida-abortion-desantis-trump-00150024

In front of a huge crowd in Iowa last Wednesday night Former Rep. Liz Cheney (R-WY) said the Republican party is currently threatening democracy and that the nation is undergoing a political shift.

She added: “We know Trump tried once not to leave office, and he will have no incentive to guarantee a peaceful transfer of power and to leave office should be selected again. Trump said he spoke to murder victim’s family. The victim’s sister said it never happened

Donald Trump used his campaign event in Michigan on Tuesday to denounce what he called ‘Biden’s border bloodbath,’ zeroing in on the case of a young woman killed by someone immigration officials say had entered the country illegally.

Said Trump of 25-year old Ruby Garcia: “She lit up that room, and I’ve heard that from so many people… I spoke to some of her family.”

But Garcia’s sister, acting as a family spokeswoman, said Tuesday that Trump and his campaign have not contacted her or other immediate relatives — and rebuked the GOP presidential nominee’s effort to make the case part of his calls for a border crackdown.

“It’s always been about illegal immigrants,” the victim’s sister, Mavi Garcia, told local news station Target 8. “Nobody really speaks about when Americans do heinous crimes, and it’s kind of shocking why he would just bring up illegals. What about Americans who do heinous crimes like that?” https://www.washingtonpost.com/politics/2024/04/02/trump-ruby-garcia-michigan-murder/

James Surowiecki: Trump Media Is the New Bed Bath & Beyond

After the stock-market frenzy that ensued when Trump Media & Technology Group started trading on Tuesday (under the ticker symbol DJT), one thing is almost certainly true: Donald Trump is now the chairman of the most overvalued company on Nasdaq.

Trump Media had a grand total of $3.4 million in revenue in the first nine months of 2023, against more than $10 million in operating losses. Its only product is Truth Social, Trump’s right-wing Twitter clone, which has a tiny user base, few advertisers, and no real prospect of challenging the dominant players in the social-media space. And yet, as of market close on Tuesday, Trump Media was valued at almost $8 billion, making it worth more on paper than The New York Times.

Trump cultivates a populist, anti-elite image, and has legions of true believers who are convinced that, on top of having been a great president, he’s a great businessman. For these people, buying Trump Media stock—which inflates Trump’s net worth because he owns 58 percent of the company—is an easy way to register their commitment to him and own the libs, while also potentially getting rich. That’s why Truth Social on Tuesday was replete with messages from users urging Trump supporters to drive up Trump Media’s price and “drive the liberals insane!”

The nice thing about this for Trump is that Trump Media’s dismal business prospects are basically irrelevant to its valuation. The prospectus for the merger of Trump Media and the special-purpose acquisition company Digital World Acquisition Corp. includes a seemingly endless list of risk factors, including the fact that “a number of companies that were associated with President Trump have filed for bankruptcy.” It offers no plausible path to rapid growth, let alone to profitability. And it doesn’t even provide a detailed picture of Truth Social’s current operations: Digital World—a shell company that appears to have been created for the sole purpose of taking Trump Media public—says in the prospectus that Trump Media did not provide it with “complete financial information.”

Remarkably, Trump Media says that it has no plans to report, and in fact doesn’t even collect, data on how many active users Truth Social has, how many new users it’s signing up, or how many ad impressions it’s generating. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/03/trump-gets-meme-stock-business/677895/

José Andrés (founder of World Central Kitchen): Let People Eat

Israel is better than the way this war is being waged. It is better than blocking food and medicine to civilians. It is better than killing aid workers who had coordinated their movements with the Israel Defense Forces.

The Israeli government needs to open more land routes for food and medicine today. It needs to stop killing civilians and aid workers today. It needs to start the long journey to peace today.

In the worst conditions, after the worst terrorist attack in its history, it’s time for the best of Israel to show up. You cannot save the hostages by bombing every building in Gaza. You cannot win this war by starving an entire population. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/03/opinion/jose-andres-let-people-eat.html

Jonathan Chait: Donald Trump Is Not the Victim of ‘Lawfare.’ He’s a Crook.

One of the reasons Republicans were so reluctant to accept Donald Trump’s nomination in 2016 is that he was quite obviously a crook. “His business record reflects the often dubious norms of the milieu: using eminent domain to condemn the property of others; buying the good graces of politicians — including many Democrats — with donations,” editorialized National Review. Marco Rubio lambasted him as a “con artist.” The Wall Street Journal editorialized about Trump’s deep ties to the mafia and his fulsome praise of its work. (After Trump won the nomination, the Journal spiked a second editorial about his mob links.)

The suspicion with which Republicans once viewed Trump’s business career has dissipated. He is no longer a sleazy mobbed-up con artist but an innocent victim of overzealous prosecutors. The word Republicans now use almost uniformly to describe the former president’s travails with the justice system is “lawfare.”

By positing that Trump is the victim of a plot, all evidence of his guilt can be turned around into evidence of the sweeping nature of the conspiracy to smear him. Eventually, Republicans came to believe Trump had been the victim of a deep-state plot to frame him. Trump appointed a prosecutor, John Durham, to prove this conspiracy heory, only for Durham’s efforts to fail.

The right’s “lawfare” claim has some of the same elements. It posits that a wide array of jurists and prosecutors are working secretly in concert at Joe Biden’s behest. Of course, this theory requires one to ignore massive amounts of criminal behavior by Trump. (Nobody forced him to, say, refuse to relinquish classified documents and then order a cover up!) It likewise requires you to ignore the fact that Trump’s main legal antagonist, the Justice Department, has charged or investigated numerous Democrats, including the president’s son.

The common thread between the right’s conspiratorial view of the Russia scandal and his legal problems is that Trump is, in fact, a very dishonest and corrupt person. The misconduct at the root of both dramas is not fantastical or unique. Russians have frequently manipulated or gained leverage over foreign politicians, though relatively few of them have been American. It is likewise not uncommon for politicians to commit crimes. The impression that all politicians are crooks — which Trump has exploited to justify his own corruption — is surely a wild exaggeration, but the stereotype exists in part because many of them are.

What’s unusual about Trump is not that a politician got into legal trouble, or even that a professional scammer went into politics, but that a political party allowed a crook to rise to its top. That, in turn, reveals the deeply unhealthy state of the GOP, not any extralegal steps being taken by his opponents.

Before he won the Republican nomination the first time, Republicans were perfectly aware that his decades of bilking customers and counterparties, lying to everybody, and surrounding himself with known criminals posed a series legal risk. Now that that risk has gone from theoretical to actual, and it is being shared by the Republican Party, they seem to believe it’s not fair to hold him legally accountable.

But no plot was necessary here. The law finally catching up to a lifelong crook is utterly predictable. https://nymag.com/intelligencer/article/donald-trump-lawfare-jack-smith-fraud-trials-criminal-prison-prosecutor.html

Recent polls show two-thirds of Gazans blaming Israel for their suffering, and most of the rest blaming the United States, while in the West Bank support for armed struggle has risen. Defenders of Israel will often reference a quote attributed to Golda Meir: “If the Arabs put down their weapons today, there would be no more violence. If the Jews put down their weapons today, there would be no more Israel.” But that’s not how Palestinians experience it. Even before October 7, the rate of settler violence against Palestinians in the West Bank was on track to reach an all-time high in 2023. More attacks followed.

A good pretext for a war does not make a war just. War needs to be carried out without brutality and drive at a just political end. Israel is failing on both counts. Hamas may be horrific, but just because you’ve diagnosed a malignant tumor doesn’t mean you hand a rusty scalpel to a drunk and tell him to cut away while the patient screams in terror.

All of which calls into question America’s support for this war. Washington never even tried to make its aid conditional on Israel’s abiding by the standards of wartime conduct that Americans have come to expect. The Biden administration has twice bypassed congressional review in order to provide weapons to Israel. Senator Bernie Sanders proposed having the State Department investigate possible Israeli human-rights violations, but the Senate rejected the bid. Any policy relying on less debate and greater ignorance should raise alarms in a democracy. The administration’s policy has already hurt America’s standing globally.

Defenders of the war often ask: If not this, what should Israel be doing? Some of the answers to that question are fairly easy. Israel should not approve strikes that will predictably kill more than 100 civilians for limited military gain. It should not bomb entire neighborhoods to rubble. And it must make an aggressive commitment to providing humanitarian relief, rather than being a stumbling block to groups trying to save lives in the midst of starvation.

Other answers are more difficult, because to imagine a postwar Gaza that might lead to peace, or at least to the weakening of violent forces around the region, would be to imagine a very different Israeli government—one that could credibly commit to helping facilitate the rebuilding of a Palestinian government in Gaza and the provision of full political rights to the people there. Instead, Israel has a government that just announced the largest West Bank land seizure in decades, and whose prime minister offers nothing to Palestinians but “full Israeli security control of all the territory west of the Jordan.”

Perhaps October 7 will be Israel’s 9/11, or 20 9/11s—not just because of the scale of the losses, but because of the foolishness and cruelty of the response. And a few years from now, if I talk with a survivor of this devastating war, will he blame Hamas for provoking it? I would guess that he’ll blame the country that bombed him without mercy and restricted the delivery of food while his family starved to death. And he’ll blame America for enabling it. And so will the rest of the world. And they’ll be right. https://www.theatlantic.com/international/archive/2024/03/gaza-war-indefensible-united-states/677896/

Stephen Collinson: Trump is a ringmaster of multiple sideshows

Donald Trump is running one of the strangest general election campaigns America has ever seen.

He’s hawking Bibles, attacking judges, making billions in the stock market and boasting about his golf game. On Thursday, the ex-president traveled to New York to attend the wake of a fallen police officer – on a trip that allowed him to deepen his characterization of a nation adrift and plagued by crime under President Joe Biden.

But there wasn’t much in Trump’s busy week that resembled a conventional general election campaign – certainly not one that might address some of his biggest liabilities as he seeks a return to the White House. https://www.cnn.com/2024/03/28/politics/trump-biden-campaign-contrast/index.html

Bess Levin: Donald Trump’s No-Good, Very Bad Tariff Plan Would Cost American Families $1,500 Every Year: Report

When Donald Trump announced last year that in a second term, he wants to put an automatic tariff of 10% on all imports to the US, the response from economists on both sides of the aisle was overwhelmingly negative—to put it mildly. Adam Posen, president of the Peterson Institute for International Economics, called the plan lunacy and horrifying and said it would cause other major economies to conclude that the US is not a trusted trading partner. Paul Winfree, who served as Trump’s deputy director of the Domestic Policy Council, warned that a tariff of that scope and size would impose a massive tax on the folks who it intends to help. Michael Strain, an economist at the American Enterprise Institute, predicted that it would be a disaster for the US economy. It would raise prices for consumers and be met with considerable retaliation from other nations, which would raise the costs facing US businesses. It would reduce employment among manufacturing workers. It would be very, very bad.

Seven months later, the numbers have been crunched, and we now have a concrete idea about how a 10% tariff would affect the people it’s supposed to help, i.e., Americans. Do the numbers vindicate Trump? In a word, no. In 13 words: No, they just further reveal what a terrible idea this whole thing is!

An automatic 10% trading tariff on all imports to the US would result in a $1,500 tax increase annually for typical households, and dramatically increase the cost of goods for families across the country, according to an analysis from the Center for American Progress Action Fund published on Wednesday. Speaking to Semafor, Brendan Duke, a senior director of economic policy at CAP and coauthor of the study, said. A lot of that will take the form of price increases at the grocery store, at the gas pump, at the car dealership and on Amazon.

In an election over the cost of living, we have a candidate who’s proposing a $1,500 tax increase. On the flip side, the report finds that the tariff would fail to significantly boost US manufacturing and jobs. It also does not hit China where it hurts, as Trump regularly says he wants to do. As Ryan Mulholland, a senior fellow for international economic policy at CAP and coauthor of the report, noted to Semafor, roughly 60% of the goods imported to the US are from friendly trading partners like Canada, Mexico, and the EU. This proposal is not about China. It mostly taxes countries we have good relationships with, countries that are partners standing up for democracy and building a global economy that works for the middle class, Mulholland told the outlet. https://www.vanityfair.com/news/donald-trumps-no-good-very-bad-tariff-plan-would-cost-american-families-1500-every-year-report

Tom Nichols: Supporting Trump Means Supporting a Culture of Violence

Over the weekend, Donald Trump sent out a video with an image of Joe Biden bound like a hostage, and linked to an article with a photo of the daughter of the judge in his hush-money trial in New York. Voters need to confront the reality of what supporting Trump means.

‘Is This Who You Are?’

Sunday morning, for example, Kristen Welker of Meet the Press noted that Trump had “stepped up his attacks on the judge and his family in the New York hush money case” and is “falsely calling the criminal proceedings ‘election interference.’” Her verdict: “It is yet another reminder that we are covering this election against the backdrop of a deeply divided nation.”

Well, sure, that’s one way to put it. More accurately, however, we might say that a mostly coherent and decent nation is under electoral assault from a violent seditionist minority that has captured one of our two national parties, and its leader encourages and condones threats against officials at every level across the country, including threats of violence against the sitting president of the United States.

Every ardent Trump supporter should be asked when enough’s enough. And every elected Republican, including the sad lot now abasing themselves for a spot on Trump’s ticket or in his possible Cabinet, should be asked when they will risk their careers for the sake of the country, if not their souls. We have reached an important moment—one of many over the past years, if we are to be honest. After all we have learned and seen, and all of the questions we might ask of Trump supporters, perhaps only one simple and direct question truly matters now:

Is this who you are? https://www.theatlantic.com/newsletters/archive/2024/04/supporting-trump-means-supporting-a-culture-of-violence/677941/

Thomas B. Edsall: Trump’s Backers Are Determined Not to Blow It This Time Around

In a rare display of unity, more than 100 conservative tax-exempt organizations have joined forces in support of Donald Trump and the MAGA agenda, forming a $2 billion-plus political machine.

Together, these organizations are constructing a detailed postelection agenda, lining up prospective appointees and backing Trump in his legal battles.

Most of the work performed by these nonprofit groups is conducted behind closed doors. Unlike traditional political organizations, these groups do not disclose their donors and must reveal only minimal information on expenditures. In many cases, even this minimal information will not be available until after the 2024 election.

Not only are these tax-exempt organizations attractive to large contributors who want to keep their role secret; 501(c)(3) groups have an added benefit: Donors can deduct their gifts from their taxable income.

The authors of Project 2025 want to avoid a repetition of 2017, when Trump took office with scant advance planning and little notion of who should be appointed to key positions.

One function of the project is to put as much ideological muscle as possible behind Trump to ensure that if he wins the White House again, he does not wander afield.

In the foreword to the project’s nearly 1,000-page description of its 2025 agenda, “Mandate for Leadership: The Conservative Promise,” Roberts, the president of Heritage, wrote:
This book is the work of the entire conservative movement. As such, the authors express consensus recommendations already forged, especially along four broad fronts that will decide America’s future:
1. Restore the family as the centerpiece of American life and protect our children.
2. Dismantle the administrative state and return self-governance to the American people.
3. Defend our nation’s sovereignty, borders and bounty against global threats.
4. Secure our God-given individual rights to live freely — what our Constitution calls “the Blessings of Liberty.”
Perhaps the most impressive part of Project 2025 is the detailed and ideologically infused discussion of virtually every federal department and agency, all guided by the goal of instituting conservative policies.

This time, the conservative movement plans to exercise maximum surveillance over an incoming Trump administration. In other words, there will be no kidding around. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/04/03/opinion/leonard-leo-heritage-trump-2025.html
