"A person that has no idea what America stands for and has no idea what America is all about. A person who cavalierly suggests that a selfless warrior who has served his country for 40 years in peacetime and war should lose his life for treason — in expectation that someone will take action. The Borowitz Report: Mike Johnson Claims Marjorie Taylor Greene Appears in Book of Revelation

Widening a rift among House Republicans, Speaker Mike Johnson told reporters on Sunday that Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene “makes a prominent appearance” in the Bible’s most apocalyptic book.

“I was in church this morning, just kind of flipping through the Bible,” Johnson said. “And as I was reading the Book of Revelation, all of a sudden I was like, ‘Holy cow, that’s Marge!’”

“I usually like to leave religion out of things, but since Marjorie is ushering in the End Times I felt I had to say something,” he said.

The Speaker was evasive when asked which character in the Book of Revelation mirrored the Georgia congresswoman, saying only, “She’s not the seven-headed dragon. To my knowledge Marge has only one head.”

He stressed that his decision to reveal Rep. Greene’s “pivotal role” in the end of the world had “absolutely nothing” to do with her motion to vacate the Speaker’s chair. “As long as I am Speaker, the chair is already vacant,” he said. https://www.borowitzreport.com/

Utah lawmaker Phil Lyman (R), who is running for governor, quickly used Baltimore’s Francis Scott Key Bridge collapse to boost his gubernatorial campaign by blaming the accident on efforts to make workplaces more diverse.

In a subsequent post, Lyman added, “DEI=DIE.” https://www.sltrib.com/news/politics/2024/03/26/baltimore-bridge-collapse-caused/

Biden aims to make North Carolina a top battleground

Republicans have a long history of success at the presidential level in North Carolina over the past 40 years, losing only once when Barack Obama carried the state in 2008. But Biden’s loss there in 2020 was the closest a Democrat has come since then, with Trump winning by just slightly more than 1 percentage point. Meanwhile, the state’s rapid growth has seen its largest Democratic-leaning counties become bigger and more blue.

That’s encouraged Democrats to be much more proactive in North Carolina this time around, particularly as it’s the only front-line swing state Biden did not carry in 2020. Already, his campaign has staffed up top positions and included the state in its $25 million battleground state ad buy. https://www.nbcnews.com/politics/2024-election/biden-north-carolina-top-battleground-trump-rcna143970

Trump compares himself to Jesus Christ – again

Donald Trump took to Truth Social to once again compare himself to Jesus Christ as he complained about the criminal and civil cases against him, which he views as politically motivated persecution.

On Monday, Mr Trump claimed that he received a message stating: “It’s ironic that Christ walked through His greatest persecution the very week they are trying to steal your property from you.”

“Beautiful, thank you!” Mr Trump responded, seemingly moved by the message that his $464m fine for decades of financial fraud is on the same level as the crucifixion and subsequent resurrection of Jesus Christ. The fine stems from a civil case in which New York State prosecuted Mr Trump for inflating the value of his assets to get better deals on loans and insurance.

The supposed sender of the message also included a verse saying, “They have also surrounded me with words of hatred – and fought against me without a cause – In return for my love they are my accusers ... let an accuser stand at his right hand – when he is judged – let him be found guilty – and let his prayer become sin – let his days be few – and let another take his office.” https://www.independent.co.uk/news/world/americas/us-politics/donald-trump-jesus-christ-compare-truth-social-b2518772.html

Lev Parnas, ex-Giuliani associate, testified allegations against Bidens are false and 'spread by the Kremlin'

In an interview with NBC News after his testimony, Parnas argued that the impeachment inquiry hearings are "pushing the same Russian narrative and propaganda.”

Ex-Rudy Giuliani associate Lev Parnas slammed former President Donald Trump and his associates for pushing what he said were false allegations against the Biden family during the House Oversight Committee's hearing Wednesday in the GOP impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden.

Parnas, a Ukrainian American businessman who worked closely with former Trump attorney Giuliani in 2018 and 2019 to try to find damaging information about the president, appeared as a witness at the invitation of committee Democrats alongside Hunter Biden’s former business partners Tony Bobulinski and Jason Galanis.

Biden Gains Ground Against Trump in Six Key States

President Joe Biden has gained ground against Republican Donald Trump in six of seven key swing states, and significantly so in at least two of them. The results make for the Democrat’s strongest position yet in a monthly Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll.

The move in the president’s direction comes after five months of mostly consistent Trump leads, and follows a State of the Union address that rallied Democrats and seemed to mitigate concerns about Biden’s age.

The shift was significant in Wisconsin, where Biden leads Trump by one point after trailing him by four points in February, and in Pennsylvania, where the candidates are tied after Trump held a six-point lead last month. They are also tied in Michigan. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-26/election-2024-poll-biden-gains-on-trump-in-six-swing-states

Tax the Rich Is Actually a Popular Bipartisan Stance, Poll Shows

The progressive rallying cry of “tax the rich” has morphed into a popular policy stance with voters in the key states that will decide the 2024 election, enjoying support even among those who prefer billionaire Donald Trump, according to the latest Bloomberg News/Morning Consult poll.

Fully 69% of registered voters in seven swing states say they favor higher taxes on billionaires, and they support higher income taxes on people who make more than $400,000 a year by the same margin, a potential boon to Democratic President Joe Biden’s economic agenda if he wins a second term. https://www.bloomberg.com/news/articles/2024-03-26/swing-state-voters-favor-tax-the-rich-movement-election-poll?srnd=undefined&embedded-checkout=true

Trump’s invite to major donors prioritizes the committee paying his legal bills over the RNC

Donald Trump’s new joint fundraising agreement with the Republican National Committee directs donations to his campaign and a political action committee that pays the former president’s legal bills before the RNC gets a cut, according to a fundraising invitation obtained by The Associated Press.

The unorthodox diversion of funds to the Save America PAC makes it more likely that Republican donors could see their money go to Trump’s lawyers, who have received at least $76 million over the last two years to defend him against four felony indictments and multiple civil cases. Some Republicans are already troubled that Trump’s takeover of the RNC could shortchange the cash-strapped party. https://apnews.com/article/trump-campaign-fundraising-rnc-c0e8f1e7b59f70c5237e13a3462e5790

Judge dismisses ‘vapid’ Elon Musk lawsuit against group that cataloged racist content on X

A judge in California on Monday dismissed the tech billionaire Elon Musk’s lawsuit against the Center for Countering Digital Hate, a non-profit that has published reports chronicling the rise of racist, antisemitic and extremist content on X, formerly Twitter, since Musk’s acquisition.

The case was dismissed in accordance with the state’s anti-Slapp law, which forbids nuisance lawsuits intended to punish the exercise of free speech.

“Sometimes it is unclear what is driving a litigation, and only by reading between the lines of a complaint can one attempt to surmise a plaintiff’s true purpose,” wrote Charles Breyer, the US district judge, in the ruling. “Other times, a complaint is so unabashedly and vociferously about one thing that there can be no mistaking that purpose. This case represents the latter circumstance. This case is about punishing the defendants for their speech.” https://www.theguardian.com/technology/2024/mar/25/elon-musk-hate-speech-lawsuit

Trump Urges Israel to ‘Finish Up Your War'

Trump, in an interview with a conservative Israeli news outlet that was published on Monday, exhorted Israel “to finish up your war,” mixing bellicose support for the government of Israel with harsh warnings that the Jewish state was losing international support by providing “a very bad picture for the world.”

But while Mr. Trump had typically harsh words for President Biden — he called Mr. Biden “dumb” — he offered no prescriptions for what the United States should do, or for what he would do, if elected, to bring the war in Gaza to an end or to advance the cause of peace between Israel and the Palestinians. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/25/us/politics/trump-israel-hamas-war.html

Huge funding from influential conservative donor networks is flowing into groups affiliated with a conservative venture aimed at creating a Republican ‘government-in-waiting,’ including over $55 million from groups linked to conservative activist Leonard Leo and the Koch network.

Launched by the Heritage Foundation in April 2022, Project 2025 is a two-pronged initiative to develop staunch conservative policy recommendations and grow a roster of thousands of right-wing personnel ready to fill the next Republican administration. Biden is using the ‘are you better off today’ question to contrast himself with Trump

The Democratic president reminded the audience that the coronavirus had reached America, hospital emergency rooms were overcrowded, first responders were risking their lives to care for the sick and some nurses wore trash bags due to the scarcity of personal protective equipment.

"Morgues were being set up outside of hospitals because so many people were dying, unemployment shot up, the stock market crashed and grocery store shelves were bare," Biden said.

"And we were even in a toilet paper crisis,” he added, before he began to describe a turnaround after Trump.

OPINION

Dean Obeidallah: Democrats should NOT save MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson from Marjorie Taylor Greene

There’s an age-old adage when it comes to the stock market: “Don't try to catch a falling knife." The idea behind this Wall Street axiom is that if a stock is badly dropping in price, don’t buy the stock until it hits rock bottom because it could keep dropping—potentially even going bankrupt.

That’s exactly how I feel about the prospect of House Democrats stepping in to save the job of MAGA Speaker Mike Johnson after Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene filed a motion on Friday to remove Johnson from his position. My advice to Democrats is: Don’t catch a falling Republican. Instead, hope the GOP keeps plummeting in value to the point of bankruptcy. (After all, the GOP Is already morally bankrupt.)

What got us here is that Greene—who loves media attention almost as much as her beloved terrorist Donald Trump—told a gaggle of reporters Friday, “Today, I filed a motion to vacate after Speaker Johnson has betrayed our conference and broken our rules.” Greene was especially angry that Johnson passed spending bills to keep the government open on Friday with the support of far more Democrats, 185, to only 101 Republican votes, saying we need to “find a new Speaker of the House that will stand with Republicans in our Republican majority instead of standing with the Democrats.”

First, Johnson is a far-right election denier. After the vicious Jan 6 attack on our Capitol by Trump supporters seeking to keep Trump in power despite losing the 2020 election, Johnson returned to the House and voted to not certify President Biden’s victory. In other words, Johnson was doing by way of a vote what the Jan 6 attackers sought to do by violence.

But Johnson—who was endorsed by Trump for Speaker—did far more than simply vote against Biden’s win. He personally recruited other GOP House members in December 2020 to sign onto an amicus brief he drafted that he then filed with the US Supreme Court in support of a Texas lawsuit to overturn Biden’s wins in the battleground states of Georgia, Michigan, Pennsylvania and Wisconsin. At the time, Johnson posted on social media, “President Trump called me this morning to let me know how much he appreciates the amicus brief we are filing on behalf of Members of Congress. Indeed, ‘this is the big one!’” That lawsuit was swiftly and unanimously rejected by the US Supreme Court.

Then there are Johnson’s extremist views on abortion, including supporting bans on abortion on day one of conception. The real world result of these laws—which have been enacted in numerous GOP controlled states--is that women are barbarically forced to carry a fetus to term against their will. And as studies have shown, women in states with these types of abortion bans are “three times more likely to die during pregnancy, childbirth or soon after giving birth.”

Johnson doesn’t care. Instead, he supports these women killing measures and more, including making it a federal crime to transport a minor across state lines for a legal abortion. And after the GOP controlled US Supreme Court overturned Roe v. Wade in 2022, Johnson took to social media to celebrate a  law in Mississippi that imposed a criminal penalty on anyone who performed an abortion of “hard labor for 1-10 yrs.”

No Democratic member of the House should ever vote to keep a Trump backed, election denying, women killing, anti-abortion extremist in power as Speaker of the House. Not now, not ever. https://deanobeidallah.substack.com/p/democrats-should-not-save-maga-speaker

Edward Luce: Trump Is a National Security Risk

As every spy agency knows, the most at-risk employees are those who are heavily in debt. Presidential candidates are offered intelligence briefings during the election. Trump is facing a much-postponed trial for allegedly secreting troves of highly classified material at Mar-a-Lago.

It does not take great deductive skill to see that Trump’s financial quandary poses a national security risk. If insurance companies and friendly billionaires think he is too big a credit risk, who might help him out instead? What sort of collateral could Trump offer in return? Even by America’s recent standards, this creates a new kind of headache. https://www.ft.com/content/aa383026-ac12-4d39-b6ee-075c2a248fc9

Eugene Robinson: Trump is already losing to Biden in a big way

Donald Trump has always loved to boast about how much money he has — or claims to have. When he announced his presidential run in 2015, he pledged to self-finance his campaign and crowed, “I don’t need anybody’s money.”

He sure needs some now.

President Biden’s reelection campaign reported Wednesday that it has $71 million in cash on hand — more than double the $33.5 million that Trump’s campaign reported having. If you throw in the bank balances of affiliated groups supporting the candidates, Trump’s campaign liquidity rises to $42 million — but Biden’s soars to a stunning $155 million, a ridiculous amount for this point in the cycle.

It makes me wonder about all those stories telling us how unenthusiastic Democrats are about Biden’s reelection. I’m starting to think that maybe — hear me out — we should pay less attention to what people say and more to what they actually do. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/03/21/trump-biden-fundraising-2024-campaign/

NY Times Editorial Board: Trump’s Conquest of the Republican Party Matters to Every American

In a healthy democracy, political parties are organizations devoted to electing politicians who share a set of values and policy goals. They operate part of the machinery of politics, working with elected officials and civil servants to make elections happen. Members air their differences within the party to strengthen and sharpen its positions. In America’s two-party democracy, Republicans and Democrats have regularly traded places in the White House and shared power in Congress in a system that has been stable for more than a century.

The Republican Party is forsaking all of those responsibilities and instead has become an organization whose goal is the election of one person at the expense of anything else, including integrity, principle, policy and patriotism. As an individual, Mr. Trump has demonstrated a contempt for the Constitution and the rule of law that makes him unfit to hold office. But when an entire political party, particularly one of the two main parties in a country as powerful as the United States, turns into an instrument of that person and his most dangerous ideas, the damage affects everyone. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/06/opinion/trump-republican-party.html

Peter Beinart: The Great Rupture in American Jewish Life

Today’s generation of young American Jews faces a big, new problem: a contradiction between liberalism and Zionism.

For generations American Jews have been able to lean left politically (insofar as they have) while also maintaining support for a Jewish state. Now, amid the Israel–Hamas war in Gaza, the American left has broadly taken up the cause of Palestinian rights and has highlighted the illiberalism (in the sense of civil rights and the rule of law) of Israel’s occupation of the Palestinian territories. In the US, Zionism’s fiercest adherents now seem to be on the authoritarian-leaning, Trumpist right Left-leaning Jews who support Israel appear to be losing a political home.

Plenty of politically left-leaning, liberal-minded Jews have criticized Israel’s prosecution of the post-Oct. 7 war and have supported rights and statehood for Palestinians. But the scrambling of political lines presents a new challenge. The emerging rupture between American liberalism and American Zionism constitutes the greatest transformation in American Jewish politics in half a century will redefine American Jewish life for decades to come. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/03/22/opinion/israel-american-jews-zionism.html

David Ignatius:  Food convoy carnage distills what’s gone terribly wrong in Gaza

The drone videos taken early Thursday over Gaza City brought a new level of horror to this conflict: They showed hundreds of people, so tiny in the images that their human forms had almost vanished, desperately swarming a convoy of food trucks to grab what they could.

And then, off camera, the worst happened: The crowd stampeded, trucks crushed people under their wheels and a few Israeli troops opened fire, according to U.S. officials. The pre-dawn mayhem had an appalling toll. Gaza health officials said more than 100 Palestinians died and 700 were wounded as the aid convoy moved toward Gaza City.

How to describe this tragedy? For me, it was like watching a real-life version of “Lord of the Flies,” illustrating the hell on Earth when order and security disappear and life becomes a primitive battle to survive. Israel’s war aim is to destroy Hamas, but sadly, it is also destroying any vestige of orderly life in Gaza. https://www.washingtonpost.com/opinions/2024/03/01/aid-gaza-carnage-israel-biden-drones/

David A. Graham: Donald Trump’s Nine Lives

Donald Trump loves the musical Cats, and like the titular creatures, the former president seems to have nine lives. Today, in the face of yet another near-death financial experience, Trump got his latest reprieve. An appeals-court panel in New York State reduced the bond he must post in a civil fraud case from more than $464 million to just $175 million.

Given that the past few months have seen Trump repeatedly use legal procedures to his advantage, drawing out the cases against him in the hope of eventually escaping them, this decision may look like yet another infuriating case of Trump extracting injustice from the justice system. But in fact it is not such an instance, and the reduction is actually quite appropriate.

Recall the timeline. In mid-February, Justice Arthur Engoron ruled that Trump must pay more than $350 million, plus interest, after he, his sons, and the Trump Organization engaged, according to the judge’s findings, in a years-long pattern of fraud, inflating and deflating the reported value of his assets in order to profit long-term. Trump promptly appealed the ruling, but as a defendant, he must post the value of his judgment while appealing. https://www.theatlantic.com/politics/archive/2024/03/donald-trump-new-york-trial/677877/
